When a whole people takes its image in hand...
Tired of being filmed by others without having the possibility to say what they really want, some twenty Himbas of Namibia decided to make their own movie. With humour and sensitivity, far from usual clichés, the Himbas share their ceremonies and relations with ancestors, beauty secrets, cooking recipes but also what they think about modernity... They let us discover their world! In their life - usually based on storytelling traditions- this movie-making experience was the first one! It is also the story of men and women who, as actors, discovered the pleasure to play, to invent and to narrate their personal story.
Co-directed by Solenn Bardet and twenty-one Himbas from Epuga and Omuhonga communities, the movie was very well received, especially abroad after it was broadcasted on France 5 in May 2012 and in several film festivals. It won the Public Choice Award of the film festival Planète Honnête in Cadenet, FRANCE, the Jury Choice Award of the film festival Curieux Voyageurs in Saint-Etienne, FRANCE and the Golden Devil in the category “Cultures of the world” of the film festival of the Diablerets, SWITZERLAND.
The DVD is in French and English (52 minutes, 40 minute bonus). All the money will be given to the Himbas (15€ + 3€ for carriage expenses in France).
